Hugh has been making images of panoramas and extended views for some years. Starting with the making of panoramas for the Dutch Tourist Board, Hugh began making 360 degree views of artists studios. The first showing of these images was a solo exhibition at the Royal Academy.

Hugh's work continues to explore landscape and movement, portrait and dance. In all cases bring more into the image than can be seen at any one time, whether it is an all encompassing view, or the trail of the limbs of a dancer, or portrait that shows both sides and sometimes the back of the subject's head all in the same image. All the photographs are made with minimal post production, keeping close to the principles of 'one exposure one image',
Continuing the theme of seeing more than is immediately apparent, and inspired by Kertesz, Yva, and Duchamp, Hugh has explored the trace of movement with the help of dancers and a choreographer, Sarah Redmond. These images shown in the exhibition Dance Muse at the Arden and Anstruther Gallery in 2009 explore the trail of the dancer’s limbs in images that bring focus to the beauty of the dance movement rather than the body itself.
The images are the subject of a single extended exposure in a darkened studio. The lighting is choreographed in time with the movement of the model, and the light is provided by a specially adapted hand held spotlight. Working with the nude allows the full expression and flow of the figure without the distraction of clothing. The delicate tracing of the space occupied by the dance is recorded over long exposure, the final image being a record of the space occupied by the dancer in movement.
The work is part of an ongoing investigation of how to show more than can be seen at any one time.
